Your Wedding guide to Lilianfels by Shane Smiley, Special Events Coordinator
Lilianfels Blue Mountains
1. How can you help a foreign couple looking to marry at Lilianfels?
With more than six years' experience arranging dozens of weddings at Lilianfels, I know exactly what can be done, and where. During the initial conversation, I get a sense of what the couple wants and can suggest a matching style and location. I'm very aware that they are handing over responsibility for organising a very special day and treat each one as an individual, taking time to build up a rapport and discuss all the options, from an "old world" style of wedding on Darley's balcony, a religious ceremony in a little church, to a more unusual natural habitat,

such as next to a waterfall within the National Park. I also oversee all the details of accommodation and the reception, using pictures and digital floor-planning to enable the couple to visualise everything before their arrival.
2. Why choose the Blue Mountains or Australia as a wedding destination? This stunning World Heritage area is easily accessed (within two hours by train or road) from Sydney and provides the perfect escape from the hussle and bustle of city life. The relaxed Australian attitude to life, and awareness of different cultures or religious beliefs, also helps things flow smoothly and keeps nervous couples calm. The last thing a bride with a broken dress zip needs is differcult or stressed staff. |
3. What is so special about Lilianfels?
Lilianfels is a large boutique country house hotel with lots of intimate and private areas, allowing many couples to feel comfortable and almost "at home". It is in a unique location on the edge of the Blue Mountains National Park offering stunning views and easy access to the escarpment or valley for wedding pictures.
4. Who does this location appeal to?
Couples from all over the world searching for a relaxed country style wedding in a world-famous location.
5. What are the legal requirements for foreigners marrying in Australia?
The couple must be in the country for more than week

|
prior to the ceremony and we recommend that each couple contacts their embassy to ensure that they have the correct paperwork so that the wedding is recognised in their home country.
6. What is the most extravagant or special wedding you have held? All are very different and each is as important, whatever the size. I particularly enjoyed arranging a smaller wedding for a British couple, who I had met a year earlier during a holiday. They planned to have two weddings, one in the UK and one in Australia, where the bride's brother now lives. Everything was arranged via email with the bride sending me a picture of her dress and bouquet in the UK to match and blend with Australian native flowers for the big day here. |
7. What are the timings involved and major points to consider?
We are fairly flexible at Lilianfels but I would recommend a minimum of six months preparation time for foreign couples to maximise choices and to ensure accommodation for the guests. However, we are very flexible at Lilianfels and if a couple found an ideal spot for the ceremony on a walk in the park 48 hours before the wedding day, I would do my best to make all the arrangements.
8. What is your top tip for an unforgettable occasion?
