“A NYC icon”, this “memorabilia-filled”, circa-1929 Midtown speakeasy is “a place to enjoy the past” – i.e. “the time when we dressed for dinner”; besides coming to eat, you get to “watch famous writers, actors and business” folk chowing down on “true-blue American cooking”, e.g. $30 burgers; P.S. it’s most accessible at the $24 prix fixe lunch, and upstairs its private rooms are “perfect” for parties.

One “very smart spot”, this ex-speakeasy “staple” in Midtown remains the “epitome” of “old-fashioned style” for “power” players planning to “discuss big things” over “sharp martinis” and “savvy” service; all that “exclusive appeal” can “hit you in the wallet”, but it’s “still happening” – so “dress for the occasion” (that’s a jacket at dinnertime) and “go at least once.”

2010 Michelin Guide

A dowager among the city's restaurants, 21 Club started as a speakeasy during Prohibition. In the 1950s, the club debuted in its first film, All About Eve. Since then, the restaurant has starred in several movies, as well as playing host to a galaxy of stars, including Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, and Helen Hayes.

With its dim lighting and once-secret wine cellar (in a basement vault in the building next door), 21 Club still exudes a clandestine air. It’s a place for power brokers, and the presence of a Bloomberg terminal in the lounge reminds guests that, in New York, money is big business.

Cuisine sticks to the tried and true; 21 Classics, including the burger favored by Ari Onassis, provide the best traditional experience.
